As per the new data to from Counterpoint Research, Apple locked in the best-selling smartphone title during May of 2018. At the top spot was the iPhone 8, while the Galaxy S9 Plus came in a very close second.
Apple beat out by Samsung, with the Galaxy S9 Plus coming atop the list. This time around, however, Apple’s iPhone 8 barely edged out the Galaxy S9 Plus. Both locked in 2.4 per cent of the global smartphone market during the month, with the iPhone 8 ever so slightly coming in first.
During April of 2018, Apple was beat out by Samsung, with the Galaxy S9 Plus coming atop the list. This time around, however, Apple’s iPhone 8 barely edged out the Galaxy S9 Plus. Both locked in 2.4 percent of the global smartphone market during the month, with the iPhone 8 ever so slightly coming in first. As for the iPhone X, it accounted for 2.3 percent of the global smartphone sale market share – making it the third best-selling smartphone during May of 2018. In fourth was the Xiaomi Redmi 5A, while the iPhone 8 Plus came in fifth.
The new figures released by Counterpoint Research for the month of May make Apple the winner once again, albeit by a very thin margin. iPhone X stays at the third spot, just like April figures, grabbing 2.3 percent of market share. The report states that Apple regained the top spot in the global bestselling smartphone list due to strong promotions running up to the football World Cup accelerating sales in Europe, and steady sales in the US postpaid channels.
Interestingly, unlike the last few times, Apple this time only has three devices in the top 5 best selling smartphone list, and all the smartphones were launched last year itself. Up until a couple of months ago, Apple dominated the best selling smartphone list with five of its smartphones making their way to the top 10 list. However, with the impending launch of the 2018 iPhone lineup in a couple of months from now, sales of older iPhone models are bound to decline as most customers hold back on their purchase in anticipation of a new iPhone or heavy discounts on the existing ones.

As for the other five devices in the top 10 list, the Galaxy S9 was sixth followed by the Huawei P20 Lite, Vivo X21, Redmi 5 Plus/Note 5 and the Oppo A83. Xiaomi continues to perform exceptionally well thanks to the strong performance of its budget Redmi series in India and China. In India, the company has also been rapidly expanding its offline retail availability through Mi Home and Mi Preferred Partner Retail which led to its offline sales increasing from 30 percent in April 2018 to 35 percent in May 2018.
